Chapter 11

Wednesday, Lucy woke up excited about the meeting she and Dave had at Robin’s office to create a solution to their relationship dilemma. The meeting gave her an excuse to dress to impress Dave, instead of the chickens and pigs. She went through all her dresses and chose one with tiny flowers on it. The dress was short and would look perfect with her sandals. This outfit was ridiculous for tending the sheep or feeding pigs but perfect for attracting the attention of a man.

As Lucy drove into Niwot to Robin’s office, she wondered how much time this situation was costing the farm. It was sheep-shearing time, and Dave should have been on the farm helping Miguel shear the sheep. Instead, he would soon be here working out a personal situation. But it didn’t take much for Lucy to push thoughts of the farm away. Dave had told her that once they got this taken care of, Lucy and he could start a regular relationship that would allow him to settle down into the normal rhythms of the farm again.

Lucy arrived at the office first and went inside. “Hi. My name is Lucy Bingham, and I believe Robin is expecting me. I’m here to sign some papers.”

The assistant behind the desk giggled and said, “Yes, she’s expecting you. Have a seat, and I’ll let her know you’re here.”

Lucy wasn’t sure why the assistant giggled, but it made her uncomfortable. As she sat in the chair and waited for Dave or Robin, Lucy realized she was anxious to get this over with. She thought that signing a piece of paper would make her feel secure.

Dave arrived wearing his best jeans, polished boots, and a beautiful cowboy hat made of straw, not the one that he wore around the farm. He looked even more handsome. He sat down next to Lucy, and she inhaled his scent, wonderful like fresh linen and musk. Robin appeared in the doorway smiling and said, “Hi! Now that you are both here, won’t you come back to my office?”

Lucy remembered the last time she was in that office. It was the day Robin had read the will; the same day they had buried her father. It had been one of the saddest days of her life. So many things had changed since then. She had changed so much in such a short amount of time. Lucy looked back with sadness but also with pride; she could now call herself a farmer. After all, she delivered free-range eggs and chickens to local restaurants and families; she also provided the local butcher with lamb and beef, and she was growing her own fruit and vegetables. Yes, she thought, her father would be proud of her.

Robin interrupted her train of thought, “Lucy, Dave wants to date you and is willing to sign a waiver freeing you and the farm from any damages that may come from any relationship that may come from this. . . . Lucy, are you
